KahuN kis se meiN ke kya hai! Shab-e-gham buri bala hai
Who should I voice that the night of separation is like an evil ghost her.
Mujhe kya bura tha marna, agar aik bar hota?
For me, it was not bad dying, if it were only once
Sahb-e-gham = night of sorrow, night away from beloved, bala=calamity , evil ghost
Meaning: In this verse Ghalib narrates a situation when his beloved had promised him a date and he was eagerly awaiting her arrival. He continues to wait counting every second. Each second feels longer than life. The night passed but she didn’t arrive. For describing his agony, Ghalib is searching words. He says, “How do I describe what a night without her presence feels. In short, night without her is like a huge calamity. During such night, a person repeatedly suffers pain of death; yet, he doesn’t die. If death had taken me away in one shot, I would have been saved pain of repeated death”
